Does It Hurt

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Very often when people hear the word “acupuncture”, they immediately turn off. At our doctors’ offices, we have gotten so many shots and blood draws in our lives, and we know the disturbing feelings and common symptoms of dizziness, nausea, and pallor that accompany the use of those thick needles. However the needles at Balance Point Acupuncture are so thin that twelve acupuncture needles make up the circumference of one hypodermic blood drawing needle used by most doctors and nurses.acuman.jpg

It is common, with the style of acupuncture used at Balance Point, to feel nothing at all. Rarely do my patients feel anything but a tiny prick on insertion or the feelings of tingling, warmth, heaviness, or energy movement. Actually, it is the acupuncturist who feels the most sensations while needling, and this is what is important during your treatment.

Most of the needling techniques used in a typical acupuncture session at Balance Point require the needles to be inserted just below the outer layer of skin, though sometimes a bit deeper if necessary and never more than one centimeter. For those clients who have a deep and unwavering fear of needles, needle free treatment is available. This type of treatment requires never inserting a single needle. In fact, all treatments given at Balance Point involve some points in which “touch needling” must be used.
